What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a progressive disease that causes your bones to become thin and brittle, making them more likely to break. A person with lower-than-normal bone mass will be diagnosised with osteopenia which sometimes progresses to osteoporosis.

One and a half million of them have life threatening fractures every year. Of those one and a half million 20% will die from hip fractures, from the complications within a year; 60% will become dependant on constant help in their daily lives. This is not just a women's disease, however 85% of the victims are women.

Osteoporosis Is A Silent Disease!

You can have osteoporosis or osteopenia and not even know it. There are no symptoms early on.  As the disease gets worse you can develop back pain, stooped posture, even loose height.  Even a minor fall may result in a broken bone. These are signs you may have the disease. To confirm that you have osteoporosis you will get a bone density test, this will measure your bone thickness.

To help prevent osteoporosis try BONE RESTORE 150 CAPSULES available at Life Extensions. Bone Restore™ provides calcium along with nutrients such as boron and silicon to further boost the body’s ability to maintain healthy bone density.

Both Men and Women Can Have Osteoporosis!

Both men and women lose a small amount (approximately 0.4%) of bone each year after age 30, this is when the risk of osteoporosis and osteopenia increases. Our bones naturally become thinner as we age. Since women have a thinner bone mass they develop the disease 4 times more often than men. Women are at a higher risk after menopause because they  do not produce the hormone estrogen. As men age with the slowing down of the production of testosterone, men are more likely to develop osteoporosis. You may have osteoporosis as early as your 40's but the effect is not seen until around the age of 60 or older.

The thicker your bones the less likely you will develop osteoporosis. If your parents or a sibling have osteoporosis you are likely to develop osteoporosis. Small -framed, and thin people have a higher likelyhood of developing osteoporosis because they have less body fat. Fat cells make estrogen, the estrogen may protect women from bone loss after menopause. However being overweight can cause other health problems.
